"The respect for the things others hold dear is a precious part of the legacy that this great man leaves us and is a tremendous contribution to the kind of future we want to see, particularly at a time when religious fundamentalism of all kinds threatens global peace."

From the Left: A pope's pointed message | SouthCoastToday.com:

""To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that selfish ideal, a globalization of indifference has developed," Francis wrote. "Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people's pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else's responsibility and not our own. The culture of prosperity deadens us; we are thrilled if the market offers us something new to purchase; and in the meantime all those lives stunted for lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us.""

""American evangelicals have done a lot of great work," Williams tells All Things Considered weekend host Arun Rath. German Outrage Swells Over a Bishop’s Spending - NYTimes.com

German Outrage Swells Over a Bishop’s Spending - NYTimes.com:

"Roman Catholic bishops rarely serve as Page 1 tabloid fodder or top the national television ratings. But the prelate of Limburg earned this dubious distinction in 24 hours last week as outrage swelled after the news media reported the cost of the renovation of his residence, about $42 million, and a state prosecutor in Hamburg charged him with lying in a legal case.

The bishop ordered up a palatial living room, and his apartment alone cost $3.9 million, according to Jochen Riebel, the spokesman for the body administering church property in Limburg. Mr. Riebel said the bishop lied last summer when confronted over the cost, estimating the renovation at just $13.5 million."

The Cult of the Selfish - In These Times

The Cult of the Selfish - In These Times:

"Denying food to the hungry, chemo to the cancer-stricken? That is not American. That is what ruthless dictators do. That is the stuff of Kim Jong-il. That is not how Americans treat each other.

It is, however, exactly what the cult of the selfish is seeking. It wants an America without community, where everyone is out for himself. Alone. Self-seeking. Self-dealing. In that world, the CEO who succeeds did it all by himself—no credit should be given to dedicated workers or community tax breaks or federal copyright protections. Similarly, in that world, the worker who is laid off has no one to blame but himself, not a crash on Wall Street, not the failure of a CEO to properly market products, not a technological transformation."

Small town, big impact: Supreme Court case could define religion's role in public - Washington Times:

"“If the court were to rule for Galloway, it would have to abandon prior precedent, it would have to abandon hundreds of years of practice going back to the founders of our country, and put in jeopardy the many practices and events that reflect our religious heritage throughout the country,” said David Cortman, attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian advocacy organization supporting the town of Greece."

How did we inherit this moral obligation to bring justice to the world via death from above

'Since 1945, when Jesus granted America air superiority, we've bombed Korea, Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Serbia, Somalia, Bosnia, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Libya and Yemen. And Yemen only because the tenth one was free.

'How did we inherit this moral obligation to bring justice to the world via death from above? Are we
Zeus? It doesn't make any sense. Our schools are crumbling, and we want to teach everyone else a
lesson?'

Confession in Ballyer back in the day.

Confession in Ballyer back in the day.

'Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It’s been 4 weeks since me last confession, I have been with a loose girl.'
The Priest asks, 'Is that you, Paddy Gilford?'
 'Yeah, Father, it is.'
'And who was the girl you were with?'
'I can't tell yeh, Father, I don't want to ruin her reputation.'

"Well, Paddy, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Holland?"
 'I cannot say.'
 'Was it Teresa Greene?'
 'I'll never tell.'
 'Was it Nelly Doyle?'
'I'm sorry, but I cannot name her.'

 'Was it Cathy Murphy?'
 'My lips are sealed Father.
' 'Well then, was it Rosy O’Grady?'
'Please, Father, I cannot tell you.'

 The priest sighs in frustration.

'You're very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself.'

Paddy walks back to his pew, and his friend Christy slides over and whispers,

 'What'd you get?'
'Four month's vacation and five excellent Leads.'

The Beatles’ “Love Me Do” rises up the charts: Blogging the Beatles, 50 years later.:

"The first time the Beatles recorded the song, it hadn’t gone so well. While its fresh sound caused the ears of the Parlophone Records crew to perk up, it would take something more to convince producer George Martin. As MacDonald tells it, after Martin picked apart everything that had been wrong with their performance, he asked them if there was anything they didn’t like. “Well, for a start,” George Harrison said, “I don’t like your tie.” The Beatles persisted in comedy mode for the next 20 minutes, leaving the Parlophone team “literally crying with laughter, a factor which, more than anything else, seems to have induced Martin to sign the group.”"

"When asked about the lawsuit, House Speaker John Boehner made the following remarks:

“Mr. Christ is entitled to his opinion, however the GOP believes that the underlying message in the Bible is that giving tax cuts to the wealthy is the true path to happiness.

I don’t know where Mr. Christ thinks the Bible says to help the poor and the sick, but that sounds awfully socialistic to me, and we are not a socialist country.”"

God is pro-union - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

"In the Biblical story, God worked with Moses to rescue the Jews from the unjust economic system of slavery. Once their freedom was secured, they were told to celebrate a day of rest each week. No one was excluded. It was a way of giving them time to recharge and keep their souls intact.

In America, we've long lost that part of the deal. We've fallen into the economic injustice of working harder so those with money can have even more. That's why I think God would be pro-union."

Married 50 years - Priceless

{Via Billie C.} After being married for 50 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said, "Fifty years ago we had a cheap house, a junk car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 23-year-old girl.” “Now ... We have an $800,000 home, a $65,000 car, a nice big bed and a large-screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 73-year-old woman. It seems to me that you're not holding up your side of the bargain." My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 23-year-old girl and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap house, driving a junk car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV. Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve an old guy's problems!
